Fei Liu

Kingfisher Earrings
For 2,000 years the Chinese have been using the iridescent blue feathers of kingfisher birds as an inlay for fine art objects and adornment. Fei’s earrings feature a fine lattice of platinum forming a structure onto which antique kingfisher hair pins are positioned. Diamonds and turquoises highlight the vivid colour of the kingfisher feathers. The unique beauty of the Kingfisher hair pin gives the earrings an ethereal grace whilst the contemporary form gives it a modern setting. The light weight aspect to the earrings creates a dramatic look but also ensures they are wearable. The hair pin can also be removed providing the earrings with two looks.
The chance to rework a piece of Chinese history into a contemporary setting is what inspired Fei’s design. Working with antiques is a challenge and a joy to Fei as a way of taking tradition and combining it with technology. By using antiques as the heart of the design he is able to revive its life and create something which is born of two eras. As a rare and unusual antique, the unique challenge in modernising the Kingfisher earrings lies in the way they are positioned – Fei was always clear that they were to be the central focal point of the piece.
